Installation

Greater Efficiency

Compared to other types of foundations, helical piles provide greater efficiencies with their ability to conserve labour, materials, equipment and time of installation. A typical helical pile can be installed in minutes using common construction equipment. Post installation, the load can be applied immediately – no additional work is required. A predictable holding capacity is achieved by monitoring installation torque during construction. This process is similar to evaluating the blow counts of driven piles in determining pile capacity.

Safety Principles

All TPI employees undergo a series of comprehensive training sessions including orientations and training in WHMIS, CSTS, First Aid, and H2S among others. We conduct daily safety meetings adhering to two fundamental safety principles:
1. All accidents are preventable. We believe all accident related injuries and most occupational illnesses are preventable.
2. No repeat occurrences. Reportable accidents and high potential near-misses are investigated to determine what and why. All necessary steps are then taken to prevent an unfortunate repeat performance.

Cost Efficient

Helical piles provide several construction and performance related advantages over conventional foundations including greater cost efficiencies and speed of installation. They also offer high compressive and uplift capacities, are better suited to limited access areas, and more efficient in frozen or swampy soil. Helical systems have evolved from merely an interesting alternative for special-case foundations to a frequently requested, widely-accepted, deep foundation solution adopted into the International Building Code in 2009.

Eco Friendly

A helical pile installation leaves your worksite environmentally sound with no de-vegetation, ground displacement or soil erosion. Helical piles provide greater response in shallow depths and, compared to conventional foundations, are both easier and faster to install and remove.

Vibration Free

Helical pile installation is virtually vibration-free. Installations in urban areas are more socially favourable, minimizing irate neighbour inducing noise as well as the ground-shaking vibrations of conventional installations that can damage nearby structures and equipment.

Third Party Engineering

We work closely with our clients throughout the entire development, delivery and installation phase of every screw pile foundation. TPI contracts highly qualified third party engineers in the product design and certification process. These services may include technical consultations and third party geotechnical investigations as well as the provision of pile and pile-capping designs.

Fabrication

Fabrication

Twister Piling Inc. uses only new, high-quality materials in the design and manufacture of steel tube screw piles ranging from 2 - 20 inches in diameter. Galvanized steel is used whenever location investigations indicate potentially corrosive soil conditions.

With our own in-house transportation and product handling services, TPI’s custom designed screw pile systems can be distributed anywhere in North America.

TPI crews install custom-designed foundations in almost any type of ground or weather conditions. Our field teams are trained and equipped to provide on-location splicing, pile capping and CWB certified welding services. We use on-site digital data collection to monitor embedment, torque and variable ground conditions throughout the installation process. A strict Quality Assurance Program ensures high-quality products, professional service and rigorous safety standards.

WHAT ARE PILINGS AND WHAT IS A SCREW PILE?

Steel screw piles are made from steel pipe with one or more helical flights or blades welded on. Screw piles are installed using a powerful motor that rotates the pile allowing its propeller-like blades to pull it deep into the ground. Multiple tubes are used to create a collection of precisely positioned piles, called pilings, which provide a load-bearing foundation.

WHAT APPLICATIONS ARE BEST SUITED TO HELICAL SCREW PILES?

Helical screw piles are an appropriate solution for many commercial, industrial or residential projects, espcially those that need to be installed in less than ideal soil conditions. TPI has successfully installed screw pile foundations for portable buildings, shops, work camps, pump jacks, and much more.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PILE LAYOUT?

Upon agreement, Twister Piling Inc. hires experienced surveyors to prepare piling layouts and then reviews each one to ensure its accordance with the project’s planned construction. Ultimately, however, the final layout is the responsibility of the general contractor.

HOW CLOSE TO PIN MARKS WILL PILES BE INSTALLED?

Twister Piling Inc. installs its screw piles as close to the prescribed pin marks or placement positions as possible. Piles are occasionally offset by a number of inches to avoid immovable obstructions such as large rocks or buried concrete which might cause an unwanted deflection.

ARE ROCKS ALWAYS A PROBLEM?

In many instances difficulties caused by rocky obstructions, gravel, cobble and even boulders can be avoided. The strength of the pile and the torque applied to it during installation will usually break up most debris. Some will pass through the pitch of the helix, others will simply be pushed out of the way.

CAN FROST "JACK" THE PILE?

A correctly installed helical pile will not "frost jack". TPI ensures the pile’s blade or helix is embedded well below the frost-line during installation, which resists the uplift force from the frost.

DOES INSTALLATION CAUSE ANY SERIOUS SITE DISTURBANCES?

There is minimal site disturbance with helical screw piles during installation. Unlike the disruptive auguring required for conventional piles, there are few scattered tailings to collect and remove. Once screw piles are installed, construction can begin immediately — unlike concrete piles which require many hours of post-installation curing.

DOES TWISTER PILING HAVE A SAFETY PROGRAM?

Twister Piling Inc. is SECOR certified for safety. TPI is also CWB certified and fully insured through the Alberta Workers Compensation Board.

WHAT ENGINEERING SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?

Twister Piling Inc. provides manufacturing and install services for helical piles. We contract professional engineers in a third party capacity for design services and other customer requests.

Yes, Twister Piling Inc. provides a one-year warranty on pile installations plus life-time warranties on original installs.
